The Hyper-evolutionary virus, or HEV, is a retrovirus developed by Dr. Lee and named by Dominic Lee. It acts as an immune system for the infected host body, and allows him/her to adapt to nearly anything he/she encounters. It also grants him/her superhuman strength, speed, and recovery. Only a few people's DNA are compatible with HEV. Those who are compatible go through minor physical changes. The most noticeable change is the host's eyes, which give off a faint glow; the irises become indigo and the pupils become orange. The host also gets nictitating membranes, which keep his/her eyes moist when he/she travels at high speeds. The membranes can also be used as underwater goggles. Those who are incompatible become mindless biological suicide bombs.

When HEV enters the host, it exchanges genetic material with the progenitor virus by the process of antigenic shift. The genetic material of HEV overcomes most of the genetic material of the progenitor virus.

The Hyper-evolutionary virus was named after the Zerg virus used to infest humans in the Starcraft series.
