The history of Newark City is one of opportunity and enterprise.

First settled over three centuries ago, its founders came here as pilgrims led by English Protestant Governor Robert Milford, searching for a new home to freely practice their faith: and ensure their prosperity through trade and commercial goods. Milford and the group with him bought the property from the Indians by exchanging goods and currency. It would soon flourished into a thriving colony. It would also become a trading post for wheat, fur, tobacco and cotton.

Following the death of Robert Milford, his son Joseph led the colony and launched an attack on the Indian tribes in Sleeping Forest after many colonists were supposedly harmed in the wheat fields. This became known later as the Sleeping Forest Massacre in 1667.

In the early 1700's, a mysterious epidemic breaks out, nearly wiping out most of its people and the colony is later abandoned. In 1744, Michael Graham and a group of fifty two pioneers cross Lydia River to arrive in Newark and attempt to reopen the colony. Their attempts are successful and many return once more. Shops and businesses sprung up on what is now named Cardinal Row. In the 1950's, many of the original municipal buildings, such as the town hall and the library, were restored.

Our founding fathers would be proud to see just how far their dreams have gone.
